Too MUCH food for one sitting
by Foodbelcher
I don't know if the other reviewer went to the right Restaurant or not, but obviously he/she did not go to Kanpai.
I went with a family of four, I had the Shrimp/Scallop/Salmon for like 16 dollars; and after the Chef (very friendly and very funny) finished making the food, I had about a mound of Fried rice, more than half a dozen scallops, vegetables and rice overfilling the plate, freshly cooked shrimp, and a very nicely cooked salmon. Anywhere else and you would pay a premium for this kind of food. Def!!! worth every penny. I joked with my brother telling him that he had enough food feed a third world country. (By the way, I usually eat quite a lot, and when my Brother and I can't finish a meal, it usually means its more than a LOT)
I recommend going early. I went there two days ago and from 4pm-6:30pm is the best time; but after that and it gets incredibly busy.
Staff members are incredibly nice and friendly, hostess and hosts are straightforward and prompt <-- generally more active and run around a lot. Parking was plentiful, and the aroma of cooking was delightful.
Anyways, I recommend this place over any Japanese rest. around winston-salem. Its one of the oldest ones here, i think it was opened in the 90's...correct me if i'm wrong.
Hope you all enjoy it like me and my family did. We will certainly go back in the coming week.
- Pros: FOOD, PARKING, STAFF, and FOOOOD lots of it. Big TABLES!!
- Cons: Its loud, but mostly from the cooking and people clapping during birthdays
Lots of Food!
by catsmh
Like the originator, Benihanna, Kanpai boasts chefs who cook your food at your table. I'm sure there are better showman than our chef was but the food tasted great. We felt rushed to leave by the waitress because of the crowded Saturday night dinner service, which we found a bit tacky. She repeatedly asked whether we wanted to wrap our food to go (which began 10 minutes after the chef finished cleaning up). If you don't know what the show is supposed to look like, it was adequate but if you go, go for the food.
- Pros: Festive Atmosphere
- Cons: Rushed dining experience
Chef friendly, food sub-par and NO SUSHI!
by mlb1028
Thought this would be a nice Japanese place but they didn't even serve Sushi! What kind of Japanese rest. is this? The ribeye steak was so thin and they were stingy with the veggies. The food was average at best but the chef was very friendly and accommodating and I like the bananas at the end. Go eat Japanese food somewhere else!
- Pros: Friendly Staff
- Cons: Below average food quality
