best asian restaurant in wiston salem. i don't know who wrote the review below nor do i care. i am, however, concerned and wish to refute it. how can anyone review anything without "ever having been there?" i have never seen a mexican chef at the malay, but who cares about the ethnicity of the chefs if the food is great, the portions are large, the service is friendly and the price is right? additionally, they prepare diabetic meals for me. my wife and i have been eating at the malay since it opened 9 years ago for the reasons stated above and average more than one meal a week there, traveling from the suburbs past other asian restaurants. for a really great, inexpensive lunch try their malasian weekly specials.

We love this place!. I first read the reviews and they said the owner might be a little bit like the 'Soup Nazi' like on Seinfeld but we have found that he warms up and remembers his customers. He treats us so good but he does take his restaurant very seriously. We love the food and the people who work with him are very friendly. We are happy to call this restaurant 'home'! The friends I have taken there all love the food. You know you'll find a great meal at a very fair price!

Authentic Malay cuisine!. I lived in Malaysia for three years so I know Malay cooking quite well. Frankly, I was shocked to find a Malay restaurant in a town the size of Winston-Salem. I can only comment on the Malay part of the menu since I can't seem to get to order anything else. The Malay food is not as good as Malay home cooking but it is authentic and spiced as strongly as it would be served in country. Too many ethnic restaurants tone down their flavor to avoid offending the American palate to the point that they end up bland and inauthentic.

The portions are generous but that only matters when you like the food. When two of us go and order three main courses, we generally take home leftovers for two more meals (2 servings each). If you like spicy tastes, I recommend the Nasi goreng, the beef rendang and the Singapore noodles. Both versions of curry are excellent; I prefer the Indonesian hot pot style and my wife likes the dry curry better. For those who desire the flavor intensity turn down a notch or two, try the Chicken Chow Fun as well as the Pad Thai. I do not usually like pad thai at all but theirs is the first that I do not find too sweet.

FInally, the manager/owner Alan is extremely helpful. Just tell him what ever your particular needs are, e.g. vegetarian, afraid of too much hot spices or allergic to MSG, and he will take care of it conscientiously.

One of my favorite places to go out to eat. And the prices are extremely reasonable.
