Excellent Facility. Our 93-year-old mother has lived at Brighton Gardens for 3 years. I visit almost daily and see the way staff responds to Mom and to other residents. The staff is always positive, caring and helpful. Staff members know all residents by name and speak to them (with a smile). They give Mom all her medications, start her in the shower, put out clothes for her to wear, remind her about grooming tasks, and remain patient no matter how difficult she becomes. The biggest problem is the dining hall -- food is overcooked , they don't have a salad with the meals (just grapes or canned fruit most of the time). The facilities include a cafe on 2nd floor for residents to get coffee, cereal and pastries. It includes a TV room on 3rd floor in addition to the one downstairs, and a lounge room on 2nd and 3rd floors. There are many good books and magazines for residents to read. It's not perfect, but the people who work there make it as good as it can be. There are a lot of activities for those residents who want to participate -- sittercise, walking clubs, baking clubs, bridge, crafts, performances, road trips. Our mother often refuses to participate, but the staff does try to get her involved. All in all, we think it is a great environment. We're glad we chose it.
Great Place. Ok all of these reviews are bogus I have the inside scoop as I am a former employee (Heather Myers). I have worked at several assisted living Communities and Brighton Gardens by far is the best possibly in THE WORLD. I worked there and you will not find a better group of cna's nurses etc. I cant wait to go back to work for Brighton Gardens because that is the only place where I can say i have experienced that the residents truely are number 1.
Best Assisted Living In Winston Salem!. Anybody who has been to brighton gardens in winston knows its nothing like these reviews! Mark Mitchell is a great ED! He has improved life at brighton gardens!! He has put alot of time into improving the community and making changes for the better!! Those cna's give 100 % each day!! From The Time The Enter Sunrise Till They Leave!!! You all need to realize it's not easy taking care of you all's loved ones! They Are Only HUMAN!!! Your loved one isn't the only one who needs care !! They arent perfect but do their very best!!! Managment is devoted, educated, professionals! They give their all to make sure Sunrise is the Best!!! And Sunrise Is The Best.... No Sunrise Isnt Perfect... But It's The Next Best Thing.... And If You Choose Sunrise Your Loved One Is In Great Hands!!! 2,500 is alot of money but is it too much money to pay to give your loved one the best?? Is your loved one not good enough or not worth it???

Management is the problem here. Sad because this could be a nice facility. Mark Mitchell, the exec executive director is the reason for lousy reputation. Of course, he is just following in the footsteps of Sunrise as none of them return your calls. They avoid you after you have called in to ask/complain about something. We had to take my parents out as the would push the call button and no one would show up. Mom had breathing problems from the day she moved in. Rooms smelled okay at first but after a week or so in the facility, I could not stand to visit for over 20 minutes.
ONce again, very said that this place abuses residents, especially ones who cannot speak for themselves. I saw workers get upset with people who did not know where they were and could not get back to their rooms. THey jumped all over me when I tried to help. IS this compassion and dignity.
Good luck if you end up here - it is cheaper but your parents pay in the long run.
Make sure they do not share your loved ones medical records as they did with mine. I am not sure if it was only the nurses/CNA's along with the exec dir Mark Mitchell AND the faciltiy doctor (Iurela) but everyone seemed to know their business.

This is a nice place !.
My mother has been at Brighton for over 1 year and is very happy there. I do agree about no backup when the power is out....that surprised me. It has only happened twice while she has been there that I am aware of.
My mother loves it there and the staff has been wonderful to her. When she first got there she was weak and needed help getting to the restroom. The response to the call button was slow but there were times when getting someone to actually come took a long time or they didn't come. If a family member was present we would make sure someone came. I wasn't pleased with that at first. She has gotten much stronger since living there and now requires no help except for medications.....they make sure they give them to her and keep coming back if they have missed her in her room.
I don't have any complaints about Brighton(except for no backup power). My mother is very happy there and has made many good friends. The staff is very friendly and seem to take good care of the residents.
I don't find it depressing by any means !! They have just repainted and purchased new furniture in the living/dining area which looks very nice. It serves my mother's purpose just fine. She attends the sittersize classes, craft sessions, cooking sessions where they get together and bake a snack and enjoy a cup of tea , etc. She attends the Sunday church service weekly and everyday in the afternoon they have a social. They also have people that come to sing or play instruments to entertain as well as very nice students from Wake Forest that volunteer and help out.. They take a van ride every Monday to various areas and have outings on occasion that the residents can go on.
It's almost warm enough for the "front porch" crowd to be able to sit and rock and enjoy the weather...my mother loves that and is looking forward to the warm weather.
Brighton may not be perfect but we are pleased and love the staff members we have come to know.
Sad, sad place - residents go there to die.

Facility fee per person $2,500 - hard to believe since this facility fee was a small living room, dining room and small front porch. Parking was usually full when I tried to visit my family.
My family would not let me complaint to them because they would receive less help than they were receiving.
Just a warning - look elsewhere and take care of your loved ones.l

Mark Mitchell , exec dir, promised us the world. However, my mom was the one suffering. Whenever we complained about something (Brighton Gardens Winston which is a Sunrise Faciltiy ?
*missing things from my mom's room ( jewelry, clothes, linens)
* non working call buttons / no response to call buttons on a regular basis
* no one showing up after pressing the call button
* Mom went in and after two weeks, they had her wearing diapers so they would not have to deal with her
* no backup system for electrical failures
* kept feeding food my mother was allergic to
* no therapy center ? they really pushed their therapy
*untrained staff from exec director Mark Mitchell all the way down the line
*if you complained about anything, they were so defensive and did not believe you
*when you complained, they took it out on my mother and she would cry begging us not to complain.
*misrepresentation/fraud to get you go sign the documents
*called the home office of Sunshine ? NO ONE RETURNED MY CALLS EVER.
*Geriatric Doctor (not really) ? Mark Mitchell bragged about ? Dr. Iruela ? 336-399-6957
I had to get my mom into see a Neurologist or she would have died there.

Is this where you want your loved ones to live? Talk to the residents before you even talk to their staff ? you will really learn how the facility really operates.
YOU ALSO HAVE TO PAY A $2500 FACILITY FEE FOR EACH RESIDENT. THERE IS REALLY NO FACILITY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXCEPT THE DINING ROOM AND A VERY SMALL LIVING ROOM. CERTAINLY, NO THERAPY FACILITY.
MARK MITCHELL AND SUNRISE HAVE REALLY DISAPPOINTED US AND WE DON'T WANT ANYONE ELSE HAVING TO GO THRU THIS.

Had to pay $2500 facility fee - which was one room in which all the meetings/activities were held. Call button response was at times two/three hours or not at all.
No activities to really stop you from gaining weight - food not bad but meals were the main activity there; no mind activities as promised when we signed up.
Their management was virtually non-existent. You complained and that was the last you ever heard about it.
They promised the world before signing up and then, the reality of life there was so depressing I could hardly stand it. I was lucky in that my family took me out after they found out that there was no back up system for power outages.
What a mess!!!!!!!!!!!! Check it out for yourself - the only problem is, they will promise you anything to get you in and once you are in, it is all over for you.

NO POWER BACKUP - LAZY SEVICE / MANAGEMENT SHLD BE CLEANING BATHROOMS INSTEAD - KEPT NO PROMISES!!.
My in-laws were there for approx. four months (I had to be with them most of the time because they did not do their jobs.) We had to take them out because their service went from bad to worse. The so-called "executive director", Mark Mitchell, promised us all this dignity "stuff" and then once my inlaws were in, my mother in law had to start wearing "diapers" because it would take them hours to get to her and she would wet her bed. Before signing the contracts, we were told it would be at the most, 20 minutes. BTW, this type of service for approx $5,000/mo for my mother in law. My father in law paid approx $2,700/mo and he did their jobs for them.
Horrible service (when you received it). Additionally, the day they were supposed to leave, they had a power outage (my inlaws were located on the third floor). THERE WAS NO BACKUP SYSTEM!!! NO CALL BUTTONS WORKED, NO ELEVATORS WORKED, ETC. ETC. We have reported them to various agencies for this and are going to take legal action. There are so many things I could warn you about but do not have the time.
FYI - They also charge a $2500 facility fee per person. Save yourself the time and money, because if you care about your loved ones, you will be taking them out shortly after you start hearing the complaints from them. The sicker your loved ones are, the less care they give you. The staff is inadequately trained and
they all cover up for each other so they make you feel like an idiot for complaining about anything. It is a hillbilly run facility and it is too bad that this reflects on all the Sunrise facilities.
