Best for Lunch Near Thruway. Midtown is my favorite place for lunch when I'm in the vicinity of Thruway Shopping Center.

Their Reuben is made of a good and tender corned beef. Another highlight of the menu is the Tarragon Chicken Salad Plate (my mom's fav).

Then there's DESSERT. Your only problem, here, will be selecting a favorite. I lean towards the Italian Cream and Macadamia Carrot Cakes, but I will "settle" for the Apple Crunch Pie! My mother, who is no stranger to baking, doen't bother to bake her own Coconut Cake anymore; their's is exellent.

INSIDER TIP: Ask them to prepare your next birthday cake!

I will warn you of my bias, as their sister restaurant, River Birch Lodge, is my favorite restaurant in Winston.

Pricey breakfast with bad combinations.. Well I suppose if you like pancakes then it isn't so bad, but for the rest of us who like something else, well you are going to have problems. Frankly I don't see what is so hard about having a waffle combo in the first place: 1 waffle, a couple eggs and a meat. Not hard. Well (like most places) that's not how it works here, if you want a waffle, it's going to be a la carte.

And here's where my issue comes in. Most breakfast entrees come with 3 pancakes as a side (you can also substitute lower cost sides as well), but you can not sub in the waffle. However 3 pancakes cost exactly the same as 1 waffle....

Now that I've got the combo issue out of the way we will move on to quality. Being where and what it is you'd would expect good (if not great) food. And on some points you are pretty right on. And on others, it's more like what were they thinking.

Cons:

Grits, really? Zero flavor, bland, and extremely creamy.

Waffles: Flat, chewy, and some underlying unusual flavor.

Tea: Not sweet or strong.

Pros:

Eggs: Fresh and cooked accordingly (over easy).

Pancakes: Fairly light with good flavor

Bacon: A tid on the greasy side, but had good flavor

That sums up our first breakfast experience here, and frankly we probably will not be going back. For the price I'd rather visit 4th Street Filling Station, or save some money and go somewhere else.
